French onion dip is one of my favorites…especially with wavy potato chips. This recipe takes a little longer than the typical onion soup mix dip, but it’s well worth it! Don’t forget the fresh veggies and your favorite chips for dipping.
Ingredients:
- 2 large yellow onions
- 2 Tbsp butter
- 1 Tbsp oil
- ¼ tsp ground cayenne pepper
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp ground black pepper
- 6 oz cream cheese, softened
- ½ cup sour cream
- ¼ cup mayonnaise
- 2-3 Tbsp Sherry, dry vermouth, or white wine for deglazing (optional)
- Hot sauce (optional)
Directions:
- Cut the onions in sixths and then slice into 1/8-inch-thick rounds.
- Heat the butter and oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onions, cayenne, salt, and pepper and saute until translucent.
- Reduce heat to medium-low and cook, stirring periodically, until the onions are browned and caramelized. When onions are done, splash 2-3 Tbsp of sherry, vermouth, or wine into the pan, stirring and scraping up all the brown bits, and cook until most of the liquid has evaporated.
- Place the cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise in a large bowl and beat with a hand mixer until smooth. Alternatively, you can mix everything in the bowl of an electric mixer fitted with the paddle attachment.
- Add in the onions and hot sauce to taste, and mix well. Taste and adjust seasonings as needed. This dip is best when served at room temperature.
